Math Block
There are opportunities throughout the day to practice math skills. My math block is 11:30 to 12:30. I also have students work on math during morning work, and at the end of the day.
11:30-Math Movement Song Dr. Jean and Jack Hartman songs are great! This transitions my kids into a math mode!
11:35-Mini Lesson This is whole group and only lasts about 10 minutes. Brain research shows a child can attend only about the number of minutes of his or her age. I work on various skills at this time, depending on what most of the kids need.
11:45-Song or book with kid's involvement. This is a good time to act out a math story or song.
11:50-Tub instructions or review
11:55-Math tubs These change throughout the year, but kids get to choose where they work. At this time I am conferencing, pulling small groups and assessing.
The end of the day is when I do calendar for 5-10 minutes. I also introduce math games or a new skill. Oftentimes this learning carries into our morning work.
